Crowds in Minnesota are paying $10 per cup for coffee made from beans digested by Indonesian cats and then gathered from their feces, according to a Local
6 News report.
An 8-ounce cup of Kopi Luwak coffee is for sale at Jim Cone's "Coffee and Tea Limited" store in Minneapolis.
The Civet cats eat the coffee, digest it and then the makers harvest the remnants from their excrement.
"It's a unique product," roastmaster Jim Cone said. "You have to have an army of Civet cats to pick this stuff and process it."
"I'm really interested because of the way that it's processed," coffee lover Bonnie Riley said.
Some drinkers admit the process may be gross, but say the coffee is great.
"It is very rich and soft," Kopi Luwak drinker Alex Danzberger said. "There's definitely a different flavor to it and you can't quite describe what it is.
I hate to think what it is but it is very good."
Civets also emit a substance that is sometimes used in perfumes.
Kopi Luwak isn't offered at major chains like Starbucks.
One-pound bags of the coffee sell for $420.

Damn, that's pretty crappy. Sounds crappy too.
Thanks for the story.
Bob
I wanna know who first scratched their head and said, "Gee, I wonder what coffee would taste like straight out of a cat's ass?"
Ya, it is gross, but kind of along the lines of the person who looked at a cow and said, Gee. If I squeeze this I wonder what it tastes like!
My question, how do they get the cats to eat the beans in the first place? I can't imagine cats are naturally attracted to coffee beans!
Hmm, if they're not naturally attracted to coffee beans, then maybe the coffee is really cat crap, and nothing more. There are more disgusting things in the tap water here where I live, cat crap is nothing. *smiling with brown teeth*
hell no. these people are sickning.
Personally, I love coffee as anyone who has spent time around me will tell you. I don't care if it comes from a vending machine, Exxon, Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. I'd have to draw the line here. Of course, how much food would any of us stop eating if we knew how it was prepared?
Lou
Well, vending machine, that's okay. Exxon, sort of okay. Dunkin Donuts, I actually like their coffee.
Starbucks is good but too expensive.
Cat's ass, no way.
Bob
Mmmmm!
The best part of waking up, is cat crap in your cup!
coffee sucks anyway. Maybe cat crap will spice it up a bit. smiles shea
There's no way in hell I'd be drinking that stuff.
Okay buckeye fan and the other girl have me on the floor laughing. I agree with them, but think about the adds, and how the show how the coffee is processed. Wonder if the FCC will ban them from the public view. *SMILE* Oh and thanksfor the info, I'll make sure I'm sober, aware, and not mumbling when I go to Starbucks, can't be sure what the counter person will think you said. :) What's next. Rats ass tea?
I think I'll stick to my Folgers, lol.
How nasty!
Yummy, rat's ass tea. Thanks for the idea forereel.
hey, I bet it'd sell.

OK, I gotta admit, this is funny, and several of these posts, namely Becky's and Sarah's, crack me up. But there's one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. I don't want to kill the humor here, but here's my question. How does this effect the cats involved? You can't tell me that coffee beans are actually nutritionally good for cats? And, as someone said earlier, I don't see how cats would be naturally attracted to coffee beans. So, I really hope makers of this stuff aren't forcing the cats to eat the beans, or not feed them enough regular food so they'll eat the beans? I don't know. Maybe I'm just too serious, but after I spent a minute or so laughing at this, I really did start worrying about the kitties involved.
You are a true cat lover, and there's nothing wrong with thinking about the practical side of this. I also hope the cats are not being harmed in any way.
I don't know, if coffee beans have the same effect on cats that pinto beans do on humans, then I'm still worried about the health of the consumers and, especially, the factory workers who have to create this gruesome product.
Could this increase the methane in the atmosphere thus shortening the time we have to deal with global warming? Just wondering.
